چکیده

Background The effect of exercise on cardiac function is important in the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease [1], yet is clinically not available with MRI. Instead, pharmacological agents are used, which have several disadvantages [2]. Recent work has addressed this shortcoming with an MR compatible ergometer next to the magnet [3], albeit with an unavoidable time delay between exercising and actual scanning, which can reduce the measured effect. In this pilot study, we investigated flow and area changes in the aorta with customized exercise equipment that functions in the bore.

Leveling of arterial wall stiffness between aortic arch and left carotid artery due to aging is associated with reduced volume flow towards the brain: pulse wave velocity evaluation with high-field velocity-encoded MRI

Background A discrete transition of wall stiffness at the interface of a compliant aorta and stiffer carotid arteries creates a reflection site for the aortic pulse wave and consequently limits excessive pulsatile energy transmission towards the brain. Arterial wall stiffness can be expressed by the pulse wave velocity (PWV) and dualslice one-directional through-plane velocity-encoded (VE) MRI ...

Evaluation of reducing temporal resolution on the accuracy of aortic pulse wave velocity assessment from velocity encoded MRI

Background Aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV), the propagation speed of blood flow velocity waves through the aorta, is a marker of aortic stiffness with prognostic value in various diseases with vascular expression. One-directional throughplane velocity-encoded (VE) MRI, planned perpendicular to the ascending aorta and additionally transecting the proximal descending aorta (Figure 1), is a valid...

Different techniques for measuring aortic pulse wave velocity using magnetic resonance imaging

Introduction: The aorta is a basic determiner of the total systemic compliance. Maintaining the viscoelastic properties of the aorta is essential for proper biological functioning (1). Reduced aortic compliance has shown to correlate with different pathologic states. The assessment of aortic stiffness is increasingly used in the clinical assessment of cardiac patients. Invasive techniques using...

Detection of Time Delay for Aortic Compliance Evaluation

Aortic compliance (AC) can be evaluated noninvasively and its reduction with age in normals has been demonstrated with both MRI and Doppler echo methods. Aortic pulse wave velocity (PWV), a measurement of the flow pulse traveling along aorta as a surrogate for AC, can be assessed using a single plane breath-hold phase contrast (PC) imaging technique. Accurate determination of the time delay (Δt...

Accuracy of aortic pulse wave velocity assessment with velocity-encoded MRI: validation in patients with Marfan syndrome

Introduction The leading cause of premature death in patients with Marfan syndrome (MFS) is aortic dissection and subsequent rupture after progressive aorta dilatation due to increased wall stiffening. Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV), defined as the systolic flow velocity wave front propagation speed through the aorta, is a marker of wall stiffness with proven prognostic value in MFS. Recently it was...
